Click on the "Request a MacGuffin (print) quote" to be taken to our order form. Complete the order form with as much or as little detail as you'd like, and use the "Easy Button" to skip over sections you aren't sure about. We may ask some follow up questions if necessary to flush out your idea. Then we'll use our printing expertise to customize your MacGuffin's print profile to meet your specific needs. If no 3D design for your MacGuffin currently exists we can work with you on modeling one for a separate modeling fee.
Once your print profile is ready we will send you a quote containing all the details for your order, a guaranteed delivery timeline, any applicable discounts or upcharges, and the final price for your MacGuffin(s). We're always happy to answer any questions you have about our quotes. Each quote is good for two weeks and locks in any discounts available at the time the quote is requested.
Once you confirm the quote and place your deposit most orders will be ready for pickup within a week, and may be able to arrange rush pickups if necessary. We meet for exchanges of orders under $50 at Salem United Methodist Church and can meet for exchanges on larger orders anywhere in the Columbia metropolitan area. For more pickup information, see our Contact Us page.
The cost of your MacGuffin is primarily determined by its print time. As the saying goes, "you can't rush art." But not every painting needs to be the Mona Lisa - if you are on a tight budget, a few compromises can speed things up. You can always respond to one of our quotes to ask what we can do to lower your costs.
The four main factors determining print time are size, detail, strength, and color. A 3D Benchy - the silly little boat many people use to calibrate their 3d printers, will take us 55 minutes to print at the default size (60mm x 31mm x 48mm) using all "medium" settings. But what if you wanted a Benchy that was...
half normal size = 23 minutes.
twice normal size = 2.8 hours.
extra low detail ("it aint pretty, but it works") = 31 minutes.
extra high detail (60 microns - smaller than an average hair) = 3.8 hours.
extra light = 50 minutes (note that strength is a bigger factor in larger models).
extra strong = 1.2 hours (note that strength is a bigger factor in larger models).
multicolor with just the steering wheel a different color = 2.9 hours.
multicolor with the hull a different color than the rest of the ship = 4.9 hours.
multicolor with four different colors all over = 10.3 hours.
a true Mona Lisa; five inches tall, high detail, high strength, and each different component of the print in one of three different colors = 33.2 hours.
That's not really a question, but we'll answer it anyways. If you already have another "champion" willing to quest for your MacGuffin for free and think they will do an adequate job then you may not need our services. We love 3D printing and are glad that more and more people are enjoying the hobby. We are happy to offer some pointers to others looking to learn more advanced printing hardware, software, or techniques!
We can print in more detail, precision, colors, and with more advanced materials than the vast majority of other 3d printers are capable of. Additionally, we have tens of thousands of hours of prints under our collective belts and know how to optimize prints to meet your exact needs. Our MacGuffins are going to be of much higher quality than anything your nephew's Ender3 can do, and many detailed MacGuffins with small or complex parts cannot be successfully completed on more basic printers, even with advanced calibration.
We are happy to discuss the potential for price matching with other print services if presented with a comparison quote.
